Yes.

The tree can also do this during the day while at the same time photosynthesizing (releasing oxygen as waste while fixing carbon dioxide into sugar molecules.)

If you remember that the tree makes sugar for its own use, it's less confusing. We animals break down sugar for the energy. Plants make sugar AND break it down for the energy.
