I used to have bleach blonde hair, I didn't dye my hair for about 9 months so I had 4-5 inches of dark brown roots. I dyed it dark brown(almost black) with a little red back in August, I went to a salon to get it done. It looked really nice at first but as you can guess the color faded and the blonde was showing through a lot. I dyed it dark brown with a little more red then last time 3 weeks ago but it's already faded back to the blondeish color and the only parts that stayed red were my roots. Now my hair is like a light brown/redish color, especially when I go in the sun it's really light and I wanted it to be dark not light. I spent 70$ at the salon for my hair to fade within 3 weeks, so I thought I might as well just do it myself next time.

This is the first time I'll be dying my hair myself in years. I'm scared to do it on my own because I think I won't like the results. Basically I just want my hair to be dark brown with no blonde showing through. I really like having the red in my hair too but I think that might be the reason the blonde keeps coming through, because the red fades so fast. So my question is, if I do it a dark brown(almost black) myself will it come out OK or will those blondeish colors still come through? I would eventually like to do it dark brown with red again but I want to get rid of that blonde color so it doesn't show through anymore.

Fading is a common problem in tintbacks, which is what you've done. The basic problem is that the bleached hair is porous and the dyes leach out.

If you use a demi-permament (marketed as a semi-permanet) like L'Oreal Castings or Natural Instincts, the product will most likely be more permanent than the "permanents" you've been using.

I hate my hair color right now, in really bright light it looks orangeish, but you can see that the roots are really red, and in the sunlight it looks like a light brown with blonde tint in it, which is not at all what I wanted. It sucks because I paid 70$ at a salon to have my hair turn out this way. Hopefully when I do it myself it comes out a lot better.

I also wanted to ask if there's any chance my hair will turn green? In the past when I dyed my hair dark brown it had a green tint it in and I really don't want that to happen again.

Green hair happens when there's no red left in the hair. Brown dyes have lots of green to counteract the red that's expected to be in the hair. If there's no red there, it can turn green.

There are two solutions to the green problem. 1) You can dye the hair with red, first, and then brown. 2) You can mix a red dye (of the same brand) to the brown dye. The hard part is figuring out the shade and the amount of red. That's what they pay haircolorists to do.

Hmmm, that's what I'm afraid of. My hair has red in it but mostly in the roots, the bottom(which is where the blonde was) is light brown with the blonde tint, there's pretty much no red in it. I think if I dye it dark brown the bottom is going to have a green tint. What if I do it a dark brown with a little red tint in it, would that work?

I don't know what went wrong with my hair the second time I got it done. The first time the haircolorist did it, it looked so good it was so nice and it didn't fade that fast. Once it did fade it looked weird because my roots were about 4 inches long before so the top of my hair stayed darker then the bottom and there were some like blotchy spots that just randomly had blonde showing. The bottom of my hair started fading more and showing a lot of blonde, that's when I went to get it done again. When I did it the second time I asked for a bit more red in it, but when I went home and looked, only my roots were red and the bottom of my hair pretty much looked the same, with that blonde color showing. Now it's even lighter and I really don't like it. Normally I would just go to the salon to get it done but since she basically didn't even change my hair color last time I was like what's the point, but I don't know why it happened like that. Could there be a reason why when I dyed it the second time the bottom didn't change color?
