We just ripped up the carpet and padding in our living room (actually, she ripped up everything except under the TV while I was at work yesterday), and besides being stapled down, the padding appears to have been glued down in spots. The house was built in about 1950, and I think the carpet has been there the whole time. I'm pulling staples now, but does anyone have any ideas for getting the glue off the hardwood? I'm planning on refinishing the floor, and from the looks of it I'm not going to have to do much sanding - the hardwood is in very good shape. Any advise would be very helpful. Thanks a lot.

I don't think it is glue, spleenless, most probably, seeing as it was so old, probably moisture reacted on the underpad and made it stick. No one would have to glue underpad to hardwood floor. It just would not be necessary. I bet if you soak it in some water, with a sponge, and gently scrape it off you will see that it isn't glue.

That's because I have already run into that situation. My house is l940s vintage. You should have seen the carpet in the DINING ROOM! On hardwood.

I am glad we solved without you spending any money. Its just elbow grease !
