Sold car but after 3 days old fault came back and buyer wants refund
Hi I have sold my car privately and was sold "as seen". All reciepts were viewed by the buyer, except 1, this was for on oxygen sensor which has been replaced it was not intentionaly hidded but misplaced in my new cars logbook. Previously the engine management light was on showing a fault and to our knowledge it was fixed and sorted. Its now been 3 days since it was sold and the problem has re appeared. The buyer is now wanting to give the car back for a refund as he did not see this missing receipt and therefore would not have bought it.

Am I liable to refund him?

The buyer is saying he doesn't want to purchase a car because he wasn't aware that an oxygen sensor was replaced? That's ridiculous.

Has the buyer had a computer scan done to determine which code is stored in the computer? The service engine light issue may not even be related to the sensor which was replaced in the past; there are hundreds of things that can trigger that particular light to come on.

You said that the light was on in the past but you thought it had been fixed; how long ago was the repair done?

He has taken it to an auto electricians and the fault that came up was 'non pegeout part' which may be the sensor, which is a different error to what we have had in the past. The oxygen sensor was put in mid October and the car has since been out on the road and the engine management light never appeared.

He is saying that if I had included the receipt in with the rest when he viewed them all he wouldn't have bought the car. The receipt was not included as I unintentionally mixed it in with my new car receipts

So stop talking to him, who cares what a auto electric told him,

The issue is the "as is" he had the duty, to have the car inspected.

STOP talking to them, completely, tell them no, sorry and leave them alone before you say something stupid and become liable.

If it's a different code, then you have no responsibility. Like Fr_Chuck suggested, tell them it's not your liability and then stop talking to them.

If they want to waste the time to sue you, I can all but guarantee that they're going to lose.
