Our house is 2 years old and the hot water in the upstairs bathroom will not work. The sink get's hot water but the tub gets nothing. The tub has a single handle moen fixture. The cold water comes out fine but when you turn the dial to the hot water side, nothing comes out. We at first thought it was a valve that might be turned off but after inspecting everwhere, there was no valve to be found.

If it is the fixture, do I have to turn the main water off? We can't find a cutoff upstairs.

Sounds like you have some crud caught in the hot water inlet ports of the cartridge.
Turn the water off and open up the valve. Now remove the cartridge and check and clean the inlet ports. I have put up a image of a Moen tub valve for you to go by and if you need instructions on removing the cartridge click on; http://www.moen.com/consumersupport/...3/moen0133.cfm
Before you reassemble turn the water back on for a minute to flush out the supplies, otherwise it might clog again. Good luck, Tom

Ok, I'll give that a try. Should there be a water cutoff upstairs or will I need to cut off the main water supply?

It's code in our area to install a access panel directly behind the tub with shut offs to service the tubs trap. If no access panel then remove the knob and face plate and look at where the supplies connect to the valve. Some Moen valves have screwdriver stops to shut the water off for servicing. Just take a screw driver and turn the stop clockwise to shut the water off. Regards, Tom

Well, I took off the face plate and all but there is no water cutoff behind it. I looked where the inlets connect to the fixture and nothing. I was temepted to cut into the sheetrock and see if the builder was just stupid and sheetrocked over the place the access panel should go. I didn't pull out the core cause I figured as soon as I did all hell would break loose with the water still on.

Any suggestions? Should I cut into the sheetrock(no issue fixing the hole) or cut off the main water supply outside? Is seems foolish to me that you would have to cut off the main water supply to do work on the upstairs tub.

My builder did indeed sheet rock over the access panel. I never knew I had shutoffs to my upstairs tub until one leaked and the drywall fell off the ceiling below.

If you shut off the main water, be sure and leave a hot water tap open unless you have an expansion tank for the hot water heater. Turn the gas to pilot or shut off the electricity.

I have a strange feeling that my builder did the same. Were there 2 water shutoffs(one hot & one cold)? I'm thinking of putting in my own acces panel up there so this could be avoided in the future.

We have a gas water heater so if I shut the main off, open the hot water down stairs and kill the pilot light I guess everything will be OK.

Just wondering, who was your builder? Mine was Dr Horton.
