In the O.T. "cherem" is specifically used in regard to the destruction of Jericho -- "set apart for a special purpose." God said: "This is mine." However, Achan stole the goods, thus he was not only excommunicated, but God instructed Joshua and the elders to put him to death. Victory then was experienced at little Ai (wheretofore, the Israelites were defeated because of "sin in the camp" -- ACHAN HAD TOUCHED THE "CHEREM"). This same word was used by a pastor teaching on the tithe which said if you do not get the tithe out of your house because it is"set apart for a special purpose."it would result in a curse. In addition stated that the work of christ did not redeem from this curse only the giving of the tithe can do so. What are your thoughts.

I would say I disagree with your pastor on his teachings of tithe in the new testement. And trying to tie in the redeemtion of Christ to giving or not giving tithe is completely non biblical.

I think that if someone believes or teaches that the blood of the Son of God cannot redeem us from this curse and we have to give money to be delivered, then this someone is not worshiping the Son of God but Mammon!
And God said that Jericho was an anathema, a curse, and that His people must not take anything of her.He never said that '' this is mine ''.So Achan was not killed because he took something that belonged to God but because he participated in an anathema therefore he participated in a curse.
This story has absolutely nothing to do with giving to God what belongs to Him!

The giving of tithe is supposed to be freewill and not something dictated. The real truth of tithe giving is that thithing is proportional representation - in other words whatever part of my increase I choose to give to God with all my heart represents the whole of my increase - thus I am saying to God that I will be a good steward of my increase. I think that when we do not practice this truth - we fail to walk in the full measure of stewardship which is a foundational principle of Kingdom life. Tithing predates the law as a holy practice unto the Lord - I believe to those who practice this truth with great understanding and not religiously will live in the fullness of God's provision. I cannot comment on the lack of tithing being linked to the accursed thing until I am fully persuaded that this is truth - but I do understand the reasoning behind it.
