    Breaker Tripping
Hello, today I took down the old 2-lamp overhead light in my study to replace it with a fan and 4-light kit. There are two switches on the wall, one for each as far as I can tell.

The fan switch uses black and white wire.
The light switch uses red wire.
The outlet box has black, white, red, and ground connections.

That being the case, I wired the fan black to black, white to white, and ground to frame; the light kit was wired as white (light kit) to blue (thru wire from fan to light kit) to red (switch). However, there's also a black wire on the light kit that has no apparent place to go since there are no more free wires, but when it touches the frame, the breaker trips, even if the switch is off. The breaker controls both the room's switches and outlets.

I used an online resource and changed it from white (light kit) to white (fan power) and black (light kit) to blue... and no change.

I did some more reading, and found that the breaker may be too low for this room. I have two computers with all the peripherals, one with a good sound setup, and a phone plugged in, and the breaker is rated for 15 amps. Where have I gone wrong?

Let's see. You had a 2 lamp ceiling light and two switches on the wall. Did the switches control different parts of the ceiling light.

You have a black, white and red wire in the ceiling box. How many and what color wires are in the switch box and how are they connected?

Did either the light or fan work either way you had it hooked up?

Where does the extra black wire come from?

Sorry, I read too quick. Black from light kit to blue > to red. White from light kit to white in housing.

IF you cap the black wire off does everything work?
