Ask Me Help Desk - How to get a dog on a schedule

Her name is Greachin but she know's her by Diva or Greachin,whne she need's to go to the bathroom, she cries but after she still cries so I have to calm her down. But I need get her on a schedule so she don't cry. I have to calm her down by take outside. She is also 7 weeks old

How do I get her on a schedule?

A good schedule to keep that I use with my puppies is... 8am feeding. 10-15 minutes later go outside to go potty. And from there on out, potty time every hour or so. It may vary. Limit her water intake. If you allow her to drink all the water she wants, then shell be needing to go outside all the time. I give water 5-6 times throughout the day. Another feeding at about... 1pm. Once again, immediate potty break and maybe a drink. Dinner time around 5pm. Another potty drink and another drink. I always give last drinks at 8pm. She should be pottied out by the time you go to bed. Stick to this schedule no matter what. Since she is so young, you may have to hold her a lot. And by a lot, I mean all the time. It is possible to raise a normal, sure-footed puppy when taken away from the litter at such a young age. Think of the puppy as a new born infant baby. They need lots of holding. For over night, what I found to work out great, is stuff the kennel full of soft blankies and a huge stuffed animal that will take up practically all of the space. And crates are wonderful! Young puppies cannot be in an area that is big enough for them to potty in. If you take away a lot of space, the puppy will learn quickly that sleeping areas will be clean. It will also calm her down and relax her. Think of them as a crib for a baby. They're safe, out of trouble, plus, it gives them a sense of security.

See, I agree with this. Very good advice.

I only have one thing to add. There are special stuffed animals that you can buy for young puppies. They're puppy proof and they produce the sound of a heart beat. It helps ease the puppy to sleep. After all, a 7 week old puppy is still accustomed to sleeping with mom and his/her litter mates. It's a tough transition, the heartbeat stuffy can help. Most pet stores sell them but they're also available on line and I believe a bit more reasonably priced on line.

I do have to ask why the pup was adopted out at such a young age. In most States it's illegal to put a puppy up for adoption until it's at least 8 weeks old.
