Should I file for bankruptcy before I get married so it will not affect my future husband?
Hi sraven,
I am not a financial professional, but here's my thought on your letter.
If your future husband is aware of your pending bankruptcy then he should be willing to marry you anyway. However, the psychological benefits of starting a lifelong commitment with a 'clean slate' should not be pushed aside.
In short, make it clear to your future husband that you are going through (or will be going through) a bankruptcy.
Also, have you discussed it with him? I would think you would probably value his input (even though you may not follow it).
Hope that helps,

Thank you for the reply. Actually my future husband knows all about my financial situation. We just wanted to know if the bankruptcy would affect him financially if we were married and I filed or if it would be better if we wait a little while longer to get married until after I've finished taking care of my financial situation.
Again I thank you for your response.
Whether you wait to file bankruptcy, before or after your marriage, it will still affect his credit record for both of yours will be joined once married.
My new husband file bankruptcy in the fall after we were married last May. It did not affect my credit. I have some old debt 3 credit cards and now his credit score is better then mine.. So no it won't affect your spouse's credit. Now I wish I had filed with him.
If you attempt to get anything jointly, and basically once they see you are married they will want your spouse info also.
And while I know that most says it will not effect both, I can say first hand that it can, because it certainly has on people I know.
