I brought a 8 week old blu heeler home that had parvo my 5-8 year old dog (zu) that was given to me about a month ago, was exposed to the parvo, they drink and ate from the same bowls went outside in the same yard, etc... well the second I realized the puppy had parvo I separated them, I took the zu to a friends house and gave her a booster shot, meanwhile I have been scrubbing my house with bleach and trying to disenfect my yard... I love my zu dearly I am not exactly sure how old she is because I got her from a friend who found her but I can tell she is at least 5-8, she's older. She is such a good dog though she doesn't ever bark and she is totally potty trained, knows how to sit etc, so surely someone who took this much time must have cared enough to vaccinate her, and since she is old the chances are slimmer of her contracting this heartbreaking deadly disease right? The puppy was youthinized today I jusr brought the zu home, does lysol kill parvo that is what I did the carpet with, please help

I am so sorry about your pup, sem0725. I think zu is pretty safe, being older and a developed immune system. Bleach is good for parvo bacteria. I don't think lysol will do very much. It really isn't a good sanitizer. What did the vet say about your older dog and sanitizing for the parvo ?

Zu is safe. Older dogs cannot get parvo from a puppy. Parvo is contagious to younger dogs. There is a form of adult parvo that is pretty dangerous, but if your dog hasn't been exposed to ADULT parvo, then I wouldn't worry about it. Seems like she was exposed to the puppy parvo.

There are some good cleaning solutions out that kill the parvo virus effectively. Roccal-D Plus and Oxine AH, Trifectant, SynPhenol-3 Disinfectant. You can purchase these chemicals from Pet Supplies | Dog & Cat Supplies | Vaccines | Revival Animal Health Those chemicals have been proven to kill the virus plus some and are a bit more effective then just bleach.

Actually, older dogs can catch it from puppies, it is just that it is more common in puppies because their immune systems aren't as strong and older dogs are more likely to be vaccinated against it.

If the Shih Tzu had been vaccinated previously and you got the booster then there is a very good chance he won't catch it.

Please post your source concerning older dogs not getting parvo from puppies. I cannot find this info and this is not what my Vet has advised me in the past when I've brought a puppy into my house.

About a third of the way down the page, this vet speaks of how rare it is for an adult dog to catch parvo from a puppy. There is some interesting information on this page. Hope it helps.

It is rare but it can definitely happen.
As I said, older dogs have a better immune system that puppies which helps, and are more likely to have had at least one vaccination.

You might want to look up the meaning of the word "cannot."

I'm sure medical phenomenons have happened in this world where an adult dog contracted parvo from a puppy. I'm sure its happened somewhere. I guess I just wouldn't have someone freak out over the fact that they bought a puppy who has parvo and now you should worry that your other dog is going to get it. Maybe an old sick dog can get it. Maybe a dog with a lot of illnesses and a compromised immune system can get it. But a healthy 5-8 year old dog? Very unlikely. So instead of telling this person that 1 out of 500 (or maybe larger) dogs can get parvo from a puppy and making them regret getting a puppy and making unnecessary vet visits, I would say no. If their dog was old and had cancer or some other type of illness, then I would say be careful and be aware that it does happen. People are asking on here because they don't know. So I guess we, as dog experts, should give her every worse scenario in the book.

I didn't realize you are a dog expert. When did you get the designation?

And, no, I'm not a breeder of championship dogs (as opposed to a championship breeder). I rescue. I don't breed, I don't buy, I don't buy from pet shops. I don't judge people who do and many of them are my friends. That is their decision.

Sorry you find being corrected when your info is incorrect to be annoying.

You can dance around it all you want - you said CANNOT. That is not the fact of the matter. If one adult dog who has been around a puppy with Parvo becomes sick and is NOT taken to the Vet based on your statement that the older dog CANNOT get Parvo you have done a great disservice to this Board and that dog owner.

If it's a possibility then an owner by all means should get it checked out.
