My friend leased a trailer in the country for nine months, but she signed a year lease. When she moved in, she had to do a lot of fixing up. However, she brought a lot of animals in and out over those months that she was there. She dicussed prior to moving if she could move early if she found a tenant to cover those last three months. Her landlord and said that was fine, so she found someone. She started to clean the trailer when the landlord dropped by and told her that she wasn't going to get her deposit back, so she decided against cleaning before she left since she wasn't going to get her money back anyway. Neither the landlord or the new tenant contacted her to let her know that they decided not to move in. And now the landlord is suing her for 5,600 dollars!! I should mention that the rent was 650 bucks per month for a trailer! It was in really bad shape and they were trying to sell it for 30,000!!! I don't know what she got in writing or anything, but they are also suing for lawyer fees and court costs. I wanted to know if this is legal in the state of kansas, or if there was anything she could do? she's not exactly well off, and she put up with this lady coming in and out of her house all the time with "potential buyers." There's a lot more to this story, but I don't know how much room I would have on here, so this is just kind of the rundown short version. I appreciate any help whatsoever and I'm sure she would too!
