I have a celing fan attached to an 18' ceiling in an entryway which is open to the stairway leading to the bedrooms. The downstairs area keeps much cooler in the winter.

Which direction (clockwise, counter clockwise) should I set my fan to push that warm air rising back down to the cooler room?

Counterclockwise will pull air from the ceiling area and push it baack down stairs.

On a ceiling over 10', you will want to keep the fan on CCW all the time, and simply adjust the fan speed.
