    110v timer on 220v hwh line ?
Will installing a 110v timer on one leg of a 220v line to the hwh work?

No, the timer will need a neutral in addition to the live line. Water heaters usually are only 240 volts and use two live lines, and do not need a neutral.

They make 240 volt timers for controlling loads such as 240 volt water heaters.
