Does anyone have experience with puppy ID collars? One of my girls may be expecting another litter (to sson to tell yet) and I am considering using these. Previously, I have used little spots of coloured nail varnish to identify my pups but this is not particularly effective as it tends to wear off too quickly. I wondered how good the collars you can get are i.e. does Mum try to pull them off, do siblings try to do so when they get older and start playing, do they seem comfortable for the puppies, do they stay on O.K.

I know a lot of breeders just tie yarn to their puppies. It'll give easily if the mom wants to take it off and very easy to replace.

Thank you but I really don't want her to take the ID's off because you end up in a muddle, not knowing who's who! We had this with the nail varnish, a couple of pups would lose their marks and we'd be like "er, is that 'no mark, red boy or green boy?" Its such a problem especially once the new owners have chosen their pup. I want to make sure they definitely get the one they chose when they come to pick him up! Trouble is, you're so busy feeding, clearing up, socialising, worming, weighing etc its easy to forget to top up their spots.

I'm not a fan of collars on pups, like you said, mom tries to take them off and they can end up being dangerous.

Just curious, where did you put the nail polish?

A dab of a bright color on their actual nails, followed by a dab of clear over the top usually stays on for quite a while, that's what we do with black pups because it doesn't show up on their actual coat.

When we bought our last pup (the white boy in my avatar) he STILL had an orange mark on his ear from a permanent marker, I have no idea what brand the breeder used but it was sure hard to get out!

The nail polish spots were on their backs, never thought to put them on the toenails - brilliant idea thanks :-) Of course, she may have missed anyway in which case its all academic. I shouldn't count my puppies before they're hatched lol

I'm expecting a new puppy soon but I am not sure out of what litter yet... the breeder I am getting one from just mated 3 of her Champions, I get pick out of those 3 litters... it's killing me having to wait!

And yep, not many people think of the toenails, we didn't when we had the black litter.
Bonus is it's easy to get off with remover once the pups are sold/at home.

I haven't every used any of them because I don't breed, so I can't tell you first hand if they're any good, but it's something to look in to. :)
