    1986 S-10 4-cyl, 2.5L, 5 speed won't start. Turned over slow until tonight.
I have a 1986 S-10 Pickup, 4-cyl, 2.5L 5 Speed; 175K miles. Been dying lots lately when coming to a stop. Would have to start again and keep up the RPS's. Completely shut down yesterday on the interstate at approx. 60 mph just like sudddenly out of gas or no electricity. No jerking or lundging forward or anything like that. For about 10 miles before that it was acting like losing power (not missing) and I would have to downshift to 4th gear on slight grade until on downhill it completely shut down. Afterwards it turned over slowly but would not start. Had it towed home. Ignition accidentally left on all afternoon after the occurrence. Found it on and turned it off, charging battery overnight. Checked and found loose and corroded cables/connections at battery this afternoon and repaired. Made no difference at all; turned over just as slow. Battery is good and now fully charged; checked with a load tester. Turned over slowly until this evening and suddenly quit turning over. No clicks. Starting attempts altogether would be less that 2 minutes total since the ordeal started, so trying to start it did not burn out the starter. Starter had not been getting slow or having any difficulty starting at all. Was about to replace ICM, Coil and Engine Coolant Temperature sensor due to previous advice about engine having a bad miss until it stars to warm up (about a mile). Any help? Thanks. Ron

. Test all under hood and under dash fuses with a test light or multimeter:

    Be very thorough.

. Replace the Ignition Control Module (ICM) and coil. Symptoms sound classic.

. Read this link for the starter motor issues:

Hey TxGreaseMonkey; Could the ICM and the Coil cause the starter to act like that? Haven't gone to the link yet, but just never thought that could be. Will be sure to let you know what I find. Thanks. Ron

No. I recommend changing the ICM and coil for the sudden death experience.

The fuse and starter links are for the won't crank situation.

Also, check the condition of the main ground cable and the starter motor cable.

TxGreaseMonkey; WOW! A fellow 'believer'. Just read your comment about John 3:16. Glad to see we have that in common. My email address is [email protected]
Will be sure and let you know what I find. Thanks and God Bless. Ron

I finally got the engine checked. The keyway at the camshaft/timing gear broke the camshaft slot. Gear and shaft spin. Camshaft and all related items need replacing. Engine has 175,000 miles. Shop quoted $850 (includes $480.00 labor) to replace related items IF valves not bent. To check that. OR Jasper rebuilt engine, $2,098.00 + $786.00 labor. Truck is "86 S-10 2.5L 5-speed fuel injected. EVERYTHING replaceable has been done everywhere else on the truck from computer to steering box, suspension, brakes, you name it; with lifetime parts. Prefer to fix truck instead of junking. No low mileage engine located. Suggestions?
