I lost my passport, but found expired one. Will this assist in expediting things?
I lost my current passport and when I was searching for it I found my expired US passport, which has the same passport number. I know the date when my lost passport was issued and all pertinent information. I know that there are sites to expedite the process, but are they legitimate or should I just contact the State Department? I received my lost passport the same day because I was just renewing it and I was a AAA member. I know that there are two forms that must be filled out in order to obtain a new passport or could I just use my old one as proof and fill out the one form for a lost or stolen passport? I should know this since I have a degree in international cooperate law! At the moment I do not have access to Lexus Nexus or Westlaw, so I thought that it could not hurt to ask! I am willing to pay the extra fees to expedite the process no matter what they are, and I know that they are high from what I have seen!

You can pay a fee, almost double the normal rate, to expedite but can only start that process when you are inside a 14 day window of travel. You must be able to prove you have a specific travel date like a air line ticket. Do all your processing with the large State Department office rather than a post office.
