I am planning on installing a tub or shower unit on my second floor bathroom. I have just moved my washer/dryer to another location make room. The last owner cut part of the beam below the dryer so he could vent it. Now I am worried it may not support a tub. Any thoughts?

I can't say without inspecting the home but lean toward saying no. Did he cut a beam or a joist, can you replace it or shore it with a sister joist?

In most cases the answer is yes, it can support your tub. Floor joists for second floor are sized to support full weight of second floor, just like the first floor is. That includes new bathroom and tub.

If you plan on installing oversized jacuzzi type tub, open floor and double up each joist under the tub only.

Milo and I are not in agreement here and that is rare. I am wondering if Milo missed the part about a floor beam was cut. Second floor baths should be able to carry the weight of a full tub and a person bathing but if a beam was cut all bets are off until someone with structural training can evaluate the situation.

What kind of "beam" do you have under the dryer ? What load is it carrying ? How was it cut: was it drilled or notched ? What's the size of the beam and in what part was it cut ? How far away from the wall it is sitting on ? Please, answer these questions. Thanks. Milo
