I have a strainer in the tub/shower drain that I don't know how to get out. It is the type that twists between completely shutting off the drain and leaving a small opening for water to get through. No matter how I twist or pull at it... it won't come off. Am I missing something easy or is the strainer (if that is even the right word for it) not supposed to come off?

This is going to take some close inspection with a flashlight and a screw driver. Put your head down on the tub floor so you can look at the stopper from the side, rotate it and look for a small set screw, unscrew that screw and lift off.

There are a few different kinds of lift and turn tub stoppers. The most common type, that Ballengerb1 mentioned, will have a set screw under the lid. As he said, get down close and inspect under the lid for that screw... see image.

Another type, is called a roller ball drain. Here, you would need to take a pair of needlenose pliers and hold the bottom/underneath stem part of the assembly and use another pair of regular pliers to loosen the top... see image.

Try these things and let us know how you make out...
