I attempted to level my toilet and when I tried to unscrew the flange, three of the screws were not holding. What do they screw into, is it the wood flooring? If so, it might be rotting. How do I fix this? This might explaing why the bolt towards the toilet were loose in the first place, but because of strong scilicone, the toilet bowl was held firmly in place.

Can you get under the wood floor? The first thing that comes to mind is to replace and repair the old floor if it's rotting. Don't want to do that? Then if you can get under the floor use extra long wood screws, cut some blocks out of 3/4" stock and scab the screws. That will give them something to bite into. Good luck, Tom

You don't "...unscrew closet ring..." to lever toilet. How much do you need to level it ? You just set the bowl, use plastic wedges to compensate for unevenness in the floor, and caulk the gap.

Milo, I now realize I don't unscrew the clost ring, but in any case, I found only one screw held and the rest didn't. Is it OK to leave them alone. If one screw hold good, is that OK? Thanks Tom, I think I will try longer screws to try to fix. Then I'm on to shimming and caulking the toilet back together.
