New Whirlpool drop in stove. Has four wires for hardwire, not a plug. I have the old stove out. Outlet box is in the bottom of the cavity. House is 33 years old. It has three wires feeding into the box, two black wires and one ground.

Is this correct.. Can red connect to either black?

You have to run a complete new circuit. According to the NEC, the only place that Neutral and Ground can be bounded together is the Service Panel.

I strongly suggest that you hire a licensed electrician and that you or the electrician secure the necessary permit.

We need to know the KW of the heating elements. If it over 8 KW then one AWG cable is needed. Less than 8 KW a different size AWG cable will be needed.

You will need to start planning the installation at the Service Panel. Run the new cable X/3 (X=Size) to the outlet whether it be a junction box, receptacle or surface mount plug and receptacle.

You will need a Dual Pole 240 V "X" amperage rated breaker (unless your Service Panel uses fuses)

I usually work backwards from the installation site. I install the correct connection method, then run the wire to the Service Panel.

Shut the panel down, then bring the cable into the box and secure it according to NEC Code. I wire the panel as follows.

Black goes to one breaker post.
Red goes to the other breaker post.
White goes to the Neutral Bus. If there is no room and I do not have a another bus bar to add to the Neutral block, I put White to the Ground bus bar. (Inside the Service Panel, both Neutral and Ground are bonded together)

(Never connect multiple NEUTRAL WIRES TOGETHER in one whole.)

Test the circuit and then call for an electrical inspection.
