I just received a gift of Pentium D 2.66 Ghz. I have problems running it. When I play song and copy a file from CD, song becomes very very jerky and copy process is too slow. Why is this with new computer? I am using Pentium 4 2.8 ghz, it works great Alhamdulillah but why can't the new PC?

Secondly it is showing 448 mb ram, I can't understand this. It should be 256 or 512 or something like that. I was very happy when I received this PC but now when I saw its performance, I am down and disappointed, please help me people.

You might want to check by doing" CTL-ALT-DEL"; a Task Manager will popup; check the "Application" tabs to see how many are running? Should not be more the 2 or 3 and if you recognize them. Also click on "Performance" tab to see how high are the graphs; high is= busy processor... means bad for playing music!

Was this a brand new machine or was someone using it? If it was in use you should defrag the hard drive and run virus ans spyware scans to make sure its clean. Also check to see what junk is loaded at startup.

What media player are you using? What CD drive?

As for the RAM, you will notice the difference between 512 and 448 is 64. What is probably happening is that there is 512M of RAM in the system, but 64M is being used for Video RAM.

512M is minimum for an XP system. Its possible that bringing that up to 1G will improve the performance.

It's a brand new system. No one used it and there are very few programs installed in the PC like Office and tune up utlities nothing else. I understand now the RAM issue, thanks for that. The board has built in ATI graphics card which might be using 64 mb ram. I am still confused about the performance, should I format everything and try installing windows again? 8gb of hd space is unallocated should I allocate it too? Please help me

How are you judging performance? And what is telling you there is 8G unallocated? What brand PC?

Well, I told u before. Its Pentium D 2.66 ghz. 512 ram, 80 gb hard disk. When I sum up the gbs of three partitions it gives me 71 gb, where is the rest space?

I am judging performance by playing song and copying a file from CD. My pentium 4 2.8 ghz does it with ease and without producing jerk in sound. Why can't this new one? Considering that Pentium D has dual core and performance is supposed to be far better than pentium 4.

Ok, first an 80G drive is not exactly 80G. Since a Kilobyte is 1024 Bytes, An 80G drive might actually be slightly less. One G is actually 1073741824 Bytes. Partitioning also takes some space. To truly see if you have unallocated space you need to either run FDisk or a partitioning utility like Partition Magic.

I can't say why the player is causing problems on your new machine. But I doubt if it's the processor. Have you tried different players?

Yes I know partitioning takes a little space but not 8 gb, that's the sure. Anyway I'll check it. Secondly, yes I have tried playing in different players but with no results. I am causing you guys pain because it's a gift and I don't have warranty cards etc by which I could contact the vendor. It seems stupid to ask people eho gave me this gift, to give me warranty card and slip. Isn't it?

Anyway I hope I'll get the right answer and solution from this site, thanks for the help up to the point.

You never told us what brand. Even without the warranty cards, you might still be able to get support.

How much free space is there on each of the disk partitions? Your virtual memory could be out of disk space!

It's a new PC with MS office and windows installed only

It's a local VIPER brand PC.

Are you copying the file from cd and playing the music from the same CD? If so the cd rom drive is under too much strain and can't keep up! Do one process or the other!
