How do I file for child support if the father is in a different state?
I had a baby 7 months ago. I was only with her father for 2 months. He insists on a DNA test, that I do not have the money for, and he wouldn't even help pay for one. I tried to make a mutual agreement with him , such as us splitting the costs and when he has the confirmation he's the father , he can just send me money for the baby without going to court. I'm 100% he is the fathe, no question about it. He has even bragged about it before to some old mutual friends. We were in NC when we met and he moved right before the baby was born to GA and I moved after the baby was born to NJ, back with my mom. I couldn't afford to live on my own anymore. I have no idea how or where I need to file for child support. I am only 21 yrs old and this is the first time I have been through this, but I believe he should have to pay child support for his child, and I need the help. I really just don't know where to start. Can anyone help?

Ok, first you will have to be sure you have made the residence requirements for the state, Georgia for example normally requires you live there for 6 months to file

If you are low income the state may have an agency that will help you file, I know GA has offices that help with legal issues for low income.

Next don't matter what he brags, does not matter what you think, all that matters since he is not listed on the birth certificate is what you prove.

He does not owe any child support legally till you prove he is the father and file for support in court.

You will file in the state you are living in family court. In that you ask that he pays for all the DNA test if he is proven the father, that is very common

I have been back here since the end of July, and I am a legal resident of the state. I was born and raised here. I know about the help with social services helps here. However I am enrolled full time as a student in school now, and I work a part time job. They started this thing in order for me to be in that program I have to do 20 hrs of community service a week for them/80 hours a month. With school, baby and work where is there time with that. Not to mention I do not even have my own vehicle. My boyfriend has been helping me but he works all the time.I know it is his kid, its more than thinking. He moved out of state before I had the baby-and wouldn't come and sign it.My main problem is, if I go into the family court will I need a lawyer and I heard somewhere they will require him to take a dna test unless he signs that he's the father.and if he chooses not to do either he is automatically charged or something? This whole thing is such a big mess..
