I joined my job on Jan 12 2009 in NYC and my employer did not give me salary for the first quarter in paycheck rather gave it to me in cash.From second quarter onwards he filed my quartely taxes.Can in some way I can file taxes for the first quarter now as this the fourth quarter running.Is it possible in some way?

Yes - what you can do is send in an estimated tax payment, using form 1040-ES. You can send it in any time, but be aware that if you have underpaid you may owe extra interest, which is calculated from the first quartr due date of April 15 to the date of your payment, so better to do it sooner rather than later. The 1040-ES form has coupons included for each quarter's paytment - but since you'll only be sending in one payment it really doesn't matter which one you use.

I had no ssn during my first quarter and I was on project away from US but I was paid in cash as mentioned above... still can I file taxes for 1 quarter now.

Which visa do you have? Are you resident of the U.S.
When did you enter the U.S.
Did you file 2008 tax return in the U.S.
The purpose of asking this info is that may be the income earned on project away from U.S. is not taxable in the U.S.

Also if this is the first time you will be filing tax return in the U.S. then you need not worry about advanced payment. Pay all tax due before April 15, 2010.

I have L1 visa,I am a resident of USA.. I have work authorization.I entered US on 12 jan and left in a week as I had to finish my project in india for three months and I came back and joined office in US on 12 April.During this time I had no SSN but I was paid in cash in US dollors and no taxes wre shown or given.I did not file any taxes for 2008 as I joined my job here for the firsttime in Jan 2009.

My worry is can in any way I can file taxes for my first quarter jan-feb-mar... now.. if yes how...

Even though you were on a L-1 visa, the income you received in cash was earned while you were physically located in India.

For this reason, the only pay that is subject to U.S. taxes is that pay EARNED during the one week you were in the United States. The money earned while in India is NOT subject to any U.S. taxation (though it IS probably subject to Indian income taxes).

There is no audit trail, so the IRS has no idea how much you made during that one week. The amount is so small that you need not worry about the withholding on it, and you can add the one week's worth of income on your 2009 return (line #21 of Form 1040) as "OTHER INCOME" when you file it in 2010.
