My water supply comes from a well. Recently my water pressure started acting up. As we use water and the water pressure drops it gets to a point where the water stops flowing for about 5 to 8 seconds before the water starts flowing again. Someone told me that my water pressure switch might need to be adjusted. I opened the pressure switch up and found two nuts on top of springs that I might be able to adjust. My question is, could the pressure switch be the problem and if so how are they adjusted? And if it isn't the pressure switch what is it?

Yes that is your pressure switches. One screw adjust the pressure that the pump should come on and the other screw adjusts the pressure that the pump should go off. You should have another box just about like that one. It is the cut out switch to keep you pump from pumping too much water. If it clicks off you may have to manually re-set it.

I'm going to assume that you have a "square D pumptrol and that it has a 20 PSI cut in and a 40 PSI cut off setting. First turnoff the power at the breaker box, then pull the cover off the pressure switch and you will see two spring loaded bolts secured with nylon nuts. One tall, one short. To increase the cut in pressure, turn the nut on the tall bolt down. To increase the cut out pressure,(that's the one that will give you more pressure) turn the nut on the short bolt down. This should give you the additional pressure you desire.

Yes it is a Square D. I've been adjusting the pressure but it doesn't seem to be fixing the 5 to 10 second pause before the pressure switch kicks the pump on. I did notice as I adjusted the nuts it did get worse, the switch wouldn't kick the pump on for about a minute. I did get it back to where it was. I'll keep on adjusting. Thanks for the advice.

I have just experienced the same problem, I found the cause was that the water inlet tube into the pressure switch diaphram was almost totally blocked, I cleaned this out and it now works as before.

Great advise on the blocked inlet tube. I was about to start messing with the spring tensions but saw your post. I decided to check the tube first and sure enough, it looked like a solid piece of granite in there. I took a round file and simply broke apart the sludge and it all works great. This procedure is now on my even number years Spring (season) preventative maintenance list 2008, 2010, 2012.
