My husband and I bought our first home earlier this year. We are planning to do some remodeling to the kitchen, and part of that includes moving the washer and dryer out of the utility closet to turn it into a pantry. We have a full bathroom in the finished basement that we would like to convert into a half-bath/laundry room. Currently the bathroom has a shower on one wall right next to a vanity. The plan is to move the vanity to the other side of the bathroom next to the toilet and remove the shower and put the washer in its place and put the dryer where the vanity now sits. (Hope that isn't too confusing!) My question is: is this going to be costly and/or easy to do? There are already plumbing hookups where the shower is now, so I am hoping we can easily convert this for the washer hookups. Also, is it easy to put in a dryer vent for the dryer? My husband and I would like to do as much of this ourselves as possible, so any advice would be great! Thanks for the help! :D

Are you sure you want to do this? Ir will involve jack hammering up the floor, opening up walls, cutting into a stack to pick up the washer and running a new roof vent on the shower unles you can wet vent it through the lavatory drain line. This will be a major undertaking and will require some plumbing skills and knowledge. How much you can do yourselves will result in the overall cost. Good luck, Tom

I'm not sure I understand, but we will getting rid of the shower completely, not moving it to another location. I guess we better just have a contractor come in and take a look to see what can be done. Thanks for your help!

After yo get a plumber in to tell you exactly what has to be done you can cut costs by doing some of the labor yourself. For instance, if the plumber marks out the trench you could rent a jackhammer and open up the floor and dig the trenches. We can help. Just let us know. Good luck, Tom
