    Sump pump pit?
Thank you for looking at my question.
I have a sump pump in the basement and I decided to try to clean the pit. When I drained most of the water I started to poke around to see what kind of bottom there was. That's when I noticed that the bottom seems to be of concrete and so are the walls.
The whole pit is 18 in. across and 24 in deep and seems to be concrete all around. Is this a sump pump pit?
I thought one of the main reasons for a sump pump in the basement was to capture water below the floor so that it can be removed before it puts pressure on the floor? If my hole is lined with concrete, how can any water get into it?

    Thank you for your help!

Are you saying there is no drain pipe dumping into the pit from the side?

Actually, there are two pipes that dump into the pit, one is from a floor drain. The second one comes in deeper in the pit and I don't know where that one comes from.
Could there be a second pit?

Not a second pit but perhaps a drain leading fron a french drain outside.
Does the pit fill when it rains? Let me know, Tom

Thank you for you response and the picture

No, the pit doesn't fill when it rains. There's water coming up through the floor, but not in the pit 4 feet away. Maybe blocked pipes? The house was built in the 50's and the foundation is cinder blocks. It's a one-story ranch in south Michigan.

    Thank you!
