My one year old labrador will not go in to the back yard to pee. He doesn't really like going out there on his own, he will eventually pee but it's a battle to see who gives in first! If he is put outside on his own he just sits and looks at the door. He doesn't pee inside, just holds on to it until he is taken for a walk. He is not the same when we go to someone else's house... straight outside and pees!

I don't really know much about dogs, but it might help it you give him a treat to eat after he pees. He might make the connection that it is good to pee outside.

Mine also will not pee if they are left outside alone.
They are fine going out if I leave the door open but if I lock them out they will just sit there waiting to get back in.

How long have you had him for and how long have you been training him for?

At 1 year he should have caught on by now if you got him as a puppy.

Some separation anxiety training may benefit you. This is used when the dog is very attached to their owner and/or does not being like left alone and cries, let me know if you would like me to post more on that topic.

As for the urinating, just keep persevering for now, you might have to jut keep taking him out at regular intervals (for a 1 year old every few hours) and give him lots of praise when he goes outside and treats.

One of my girls won't pee in the yard and I eventually realised it's because my yard is concrete and slabs and she doesn't like the way the pee splashes and wets her feet. As soon as she gets to ground where it will sink in, she will pee!

When I first got my APBT puppy, I immediately taught her the command to "go potty". How I did that was, any time we went outside, I did nothing but give the command. We didn't play, she didn't hear me say anything else until the job was done. And now it doesn't matter where we are, she will potty on command.

Seems like your dog is playing games with you. Believe it or not, dogs are capable of doing it. Go out side with him every time, give him the potty command if you would like. If he doesn't go potty, then he goes inside and right into his crate or safe zone. Don't give him the opportunity to potty in the house. 15 minutes after this, try it again. Its obvious that just leaving him outside isn't going to do the trick, but maybe you're not leaving him out long enough. The only hard part about leaving him out for extended periods is that you'll never really know when and if he does go potty, unless you're watching him like a hawk. Which is why I would suggest that you be there with him. Become a statue, be boring. Don't interact with him, don't pet him, don't even really look at him. Just repeat your command, "go potty". When he finally does, become extremely animated. Its good to go potty! His reward for going potty isn't a treat, its you.
