Why do I get a black screen when updating my Ati Radeon Driver?
I just purchased an ATI Radeon 4850 video card for my dell PC. It's a plug and play video card so it installed its own driver and it works, however this is an update for that driver on the ATI website. When I download the driver for Windows Vista 64 bit(which is what I have) and install it, in the middle of the installation my monitor shuts off but the computer is still on. I have tried waiting but nothing happens, and I have to manually reboot my computer. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fully update my driver...

Sounds like it's not the right driver for your card -- either that or the driver has a bug.

Reboot in Safe Mode, uninstall the video driver and reboot. Upon reboot you should get the "Found new hardware" wizard popping up. At least you'll get your screen back. Then make sure you visit the Dell website, enter your Service Tag, and get the drivers from there for the correct OS.

Dell does not have the video card update for that driver, also I have my screen when I manually reboot my computer without safemode, I guess the isntallation doesn't complete and it doesn't have to rollback the driver or anything. Its just that during the installation the screen goes black and it doesn't complete. If I reboot my compter by plugging out the power and plugging it back in it boots up without going into safemode and works fine. And this is the correct driver for my video card, I have downloaded it from ATI website.

Looks like a bad file or a file that didn't uncompress correctly. The safest bet is still the driver offered by the Dell support site even though the date might seem old to you.
