I have a natural banister and would like the spindles to be white now and the handrail to be a darker than natural finish... how do I accomplish this?

You could refinish the banister handrail with a dark stain, after stripping off the present finish and stain and apply a clear top coat of some kind to it and then paint the spindles.

Do you know what kind of finish is on the spindles already, like lacquer, water-based or oil finish of some kind?
