    Hi, KaiStriegel!

    This is a site where you can get help with trying to figure out answers to homework questions. But, it's not one where you can simply put in a homework problem and expect to get an answer without you showing what you've already done to come up with the answer yourself.

    If students were just given the answers without knowing how to come up with the answers themselves, how would that be helping the students to learn?

    Please click on the following link for guidelines for how to post homework questions on this site.

    Well, the first step is to expand the brackets. Then, make sure all the terms in y are on the same side, and the other terms on another. Post your work, to see how you are getting with it.

    2y+18=12-6(y+7)

    count y's: 2 = -6; move left ---> 8y =

    count #'s: 18 = 12 - 42 ; move right = 12 - 42 -18

    8y = 12-42-18

    Your turn.

    The method reduces mistakes due to signs

    You simply use inverse operations
    2y+18=12-6(y+7)
    add 6(y+7)
    2y+18+6(y+7)=12
    distributive property
    2y+18+6y+42
    simplify
    8y+60=12
    subtract 60
    8y=-48
    divide by 8
    y=-6
    or
    8y=12-42-18
    8y=-48
    y=-6
    pretty simple

    Jelyn: You just have to finish post #4, which isn't hard. Add a few numbers and divide them by 8.
