    Windows XP hangs frequently
Hi.. whenever I run an anti-virus scan of big files like that of a drive(10 GB space covered), my computer hangs. Also it hangs every time a play a hefty game like NFS etc. I use Quick Heal anti virus. There is no problem in anti virus for sure as I downloaded it from the website itself. Please help as I don't have my motherboard cd as well.

If it were always a problem with "hefty" games I'd first guess a memory problem. Do you have the system requirements for those games? But I don't know why the virus scan would get hung up for that reason.

No, that doesn't really sound like a virus, but don't assume just cause you downloaded it from their site that it's not a problem.

Thanks for your concern... system requirements are fine Morgaine... those games used to go fine only before... a scan of Gb limits hangs else it's running properly... I tried with another antivirus but same thing occurs... also sometimes system restarts by itself... and then on restarts a message pops up saying windows has recovered from a serious error... only option I foresee now is that of formatting my windows XP... but since I don't hv the motherboard CD I'll struggle for drivers for sure... can you suggest something else?

Clean your hard drive. You should know that often you have to start from scratch.
Every year is recommend by some.
Sometimes you get so much crap you have no choice, all that crap sticks to your hard drive. When you are using heavy graphics, that is really hard on your system.
In the future get a software prog that will help you to play your games. They are out there.
Time for a reinstall,in my opinion.

Did you never get a restore CD or you lost it? If you never had one, it might have it in a hidden partition. If you lost it, you can contact either the place where you got it, or the manufacturer and see if you can get another one. If you post the kind of computer, someone may know the best answer to that.

You also might be able to get all the necessary drivers from the manufacturer site. The bad thing about that is that even then, sometimes they don't end up working. Once you've wiped it out, it's too late to find that out.

Have you tried one of the clean-up programs? I'm not familiar with them cause I reinstall Windows clean at least once a year if not more often -- but there's references to them in about a gazillion different posts around here.

    You may need to reinstall.
How long have you been using the same comp and running all these heavy graphic progs?

Here's a decent one. Read the whole page:
    glaryutilities

And the other posters are correct, but it may also be the anti-virus program itself that's hanging your system.
Get rid of Quick Heal, and go with:
Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus

And you can use this for off line scanning an repair:
    Malwarebytes

That's a good point about the virus scanner. I've never heard of Quick Heal though. (I do know that the infamous Norton does some pretty strange stuff, which is why I don't use it.)

I personally use Avast, also free:
avast! Virus Cleaner - free virus removal tool

    Hi! Morgaine,

As soon as I saw the name quickheal (qh), my firewall ~( instinct )~ kicked in, and I put out a post to one of my other tech forums,
I'm also aware of Snort's instabilities.

Tarun's qh may only need tweaking to "play" better with NFS, but there is something deeper 'bout that full scan he does.
It could even be the hang when he plays NFS, that causes the full scan problem.

Being the weekend, it's a little slow on the other forum, but I expect an answer soon.

I only throwed those three out there because their usually pretty reliable. Surprisingly, the AVG8 an ZA that I have, have been keepin' up.
I run glary, malwarebytes, JKDefrag, and WOT.

    WinXpSp3
    AMD 1.8ghz
    2GB Ram
    Chrome, FF, IE7

Hi kuxj and morgaine! I got rid of quick heal.. now I'm using nod32 which is doing a pretty good job.. but my system still hangs when I perform scan... but now I have been able to come down to the files scanning which it gets stuck... this new anti virus scans everything else fine... in documents and settings->local settings->temp... inside this folder... there are files named... QH1895, QH 5980, QH 9620, QH3012, QH3388, QH4627, QH5094, QH5590... I guess QH stands for quick heal... when I googled these files, it guides to quick heal only... inside these folders also I performed scan individually and found that my anti virus found threats of the kind "probably a variant of trojan.." and would delete that... and then it'd perform scan for scanned files successfully... but QH 1895(INSTFW.EXE ) is still making my comp hang... please suggest some remedy... also I want to know that, can't I just delete these files? PLEASE REPLY SOON

Yes, you can just delete those files. If QH 1895(INSTFW.EXE ) won't allow you to delete it, use malwarebytes.org/fileassassin. to get rid of it.

Theoretically you should be able to delete anything in the Temp folder. It's supposed to be "temp" after all, but stuff gets left behind in it all the time. I like to keep recent stuff, "just in case," and delete everything older than that. I see no reason for that stuff to be hanging onto my computer for dear life.

    Theoretically...

There are instances that a program will hang on for dear life (now what does that tell you?)

And You are "wise to advise" to keep recent "stuff"

Have you seen Raymond's Blog? Raymond.CC Blog Scroll down a little to yesterday's (Oct 19) "Remove Fake Antivirus and Fake Antispyware Automatically".

That's not to say Quick Heal anti virus should be included, just food for thought.

    Now... Where's tarun?

    It installed badly?

That actually was something I heard on Kim Komando years ago. :p I used to just wipe out the whole thing and then she advised to keep more recent stuff. And I thought what the heck.

That's just one instance. The one that Is fresh in my mind is a re-install of my printer program.
Lexmark has one program file that will only be purged by force. (App 4r)That is why my reference to File Assassin in my earlier post.
No matter whose uninstaller you use, It will not budge! At least FA doesn't have a problem with it.
You can rip the guts out of all the rest of the Lex folder, have the printer completely disconnected from the PC, and that 8.8mb won't budge.

Do a registry scan/clean, and count how many keys are there from Programs that you vaguely remember.

To me, this is a sign of shoddy programming.

Ahh, good ol' Kim, haven't heard that name in awhile. Yes it is a style of usage that allows a program to enable itself more quickly when it starts. but don't worry when deleting, if a program needs one it will create one the next time it starts.
And if you get a warning that you can't delete a temp file, it just means that it's in use at the present time.

Doesn't everybody like a little scratch paper when their solving problems?

    Your running anti-virus scans right?

Microsoft does have a Knowledge-base article on Msocache, though the title's not particularly helpful: Local Install Source (Msocache).
    Local Install Source (Msocache)

Sometimes that cache can become bloated.
You can use this tool (see direct-to-download URL below) from Microsoft to cut back on what is in the MSOCache directory, or to remove all Local Install files period. Very handy - why it needs to be done with this (or assumably a DOS prompt when Windows wasn't booted (ie: A boot disk or recovery/repair console) I don't know... But this IS the "official" way to "uninstall" the MSOCache files.

    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...96/LISTool.exe

But if you have office 2007 it may not work.

Oh, and tarun, Please stop with the chat/text speak it's difficult to understand.
