Attempt to refinance. If that fails is it possible to sell the car and purchase something less expensive?

Or simply turn the car back in - realizing you will undoubtedly owe something after it is sold.

Call your car company and be honest with them. Tell them your situation and in the wake of the whole economic meltdown a lot of creditors are becoming very understanding. Sometimes you can get your payments deferred for a bit or they may work with you in some other arrangement.

It would appear that a bank or finance company is involved in this - the car company/dealer has long been out of the picture.

When I say car company I mean it to be synonymous with the bank or the finance company. We usually say car company in these parts for that, and dealer for the dealership. My apologies I should have clarified.
