    Installing a new tub surround
We have just completely gutted our bathroom and are now in the process of piecing it back together.

We have already hung the drywall (greenboard) and installed the tub and need some help with installing the tub surround.

The lip of the tub is screwed to the studs and the drywall comes down to meet the lip of the tub (within 1/8").

Because the drywall only goes to the lip of the tub and not the tubs edge, when we install the surround there will be approx. a 1 1/2 in space (the size of the lip) at the bottom of the surround where there is no drywall behind it to support it.

Is there something that we should be putting over the lip of the tub so that the bottom of the surround is supported?

Before you installed the sheetrock you should have shimmed the right, left and rear walls around tub out 1/8"(the thickness of the tub lip). That way when you install the sheetrock it would have run down over the lip of tub and stop 1/8" away fom top of tub.

What type of surround is it?
When dealing with fiberglass surround/tub units, the surrrounds usually get installed against the studs and over the nailing lip of the tub. The surround rests on the tub unit and then leveled/plumbed and secured to the wall with nails/screws.

Mark, I think Moureen succeeded in confusing you. The way I read her post, she is concerned about molding on the top of the tub surround.

Moureen, if I am correct how about reposting. We are old and easily confused, at least I am.

    P.S. Pictures help a lot.

    Hi Mark...

What kind of surround are we talking about? A flimsy one that gets installed over old tile or drywall, or a ridgid, firm one that has a nailing flange... that gets secured to the studs as skiberger's mentioned above?

    Let us know more, OK?

    Mark
