My gold chain is 40 cm long and about 2 cm width. It is 9ct and I'm looking to sell it but would like to know how much it is worth. I don't have any scales so I don't know the weight at all.
Thanks, barry

Your best bet is to take it to at least two places and ask them - without a weight it is impossible to know.
just for that one item, it would be worth your trouble to get a gram scale. Here's one for under $10:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P1NYE8?...MHAN8H44FQCQ7&
then value = (weight in grams)/31.1 * (karat stamp)/24 * gold spot price which is currently $1537
I'm guessing if it's a heavy guy's chain... (40 grams)/31.1 * (9ct/24) * 1537 = $741.32
check out http://mayshinter.blogspot.com/ if you don't want to do the math.
Also, you can build your own scale with a strait piece of wood. Find center point to balance it on. Put nickels on one end and your necklace on the other. Each nickel it balances out is 5grams.
