The spinning ball can be many things. If it is the spoked will before boot finishes it can usually be fixed by running some disk utilities either from the install disk or a third party boot app like Disk Warrior. The multicolored spinning ball found after te computer has been booted and logged into (this spinning ball is an "I'm thinking sign like the old windows hourglass pointer) is usually related to a problem with one of the installed applications, a permissions issue or low resources. Dose the ball spin when you do a certain task? Like launch an application, render a filter in Photoshop etc. Once a gain a good starting place is to repair permissions and check the disk. If this dose not help try to isolate the cause. You may have to reload some programs to fix the issue. Also the spinning ball can be a warning of low resources check the applications you have running close the ones you do not need and see if things get better. Applications like Photoshop and Final Cut pro use a lot of resources.
