I rent my home with my wife and 2 young children, the rent is fairly high and when moving into this house my wife and I found many problems that exsist from the water heater not working, tiolets in bad shape, weeds all over the yard, basment window boarded up and bolt locks not in the doors. We told the landlords about the issues and they fixed the water heater which still doesn't work well, but I did the land scapping and replaced the tiolet seats etc. We had them come by the house the other day because when we were away we realized someone tried breaking into our home. The boarded up window was kicked in and the window screen of our son's room was tanted with and wholes were where the clips were. Thankfully we have a 200 pound Rotty. To make a long story short they came by to look at the problems and they never seemed concerned for the safety of my children or wife more or less said they would fix the window but would have to see about the dead locks in the door. Is there a law against them not putting dead locks on doors? All they have is handle locks which are simple to break into. What could I do? And how long to they have?

You could install deadbolt locks yourself. You would have to provide them with keys.

I ask, as I am from England, and over hear there is a Landlord Act (law) that states everything a landlord is responsible for and the minimum standards required to rent out a prooperty. In addition there is the Rent Act which governs the terms between a tenannt and a landlord.

Being that culturally the western world is very similar, chances are you will find similar laws in the US - find out what they state and you will be able to converse with the landlord a lot better.

This mught help but depneds on the type of person your landlord is.

There is no law regarding dead bolts... I agree with Cat. Install them yourself and give your landlord keys.

On the top of the real estate page we have copies of all the states landlord/tenant laws. If you wish to find out what rights you have, I'd go there and read.

Catsmine is right - discussions are always better, but knowledge of what is laid down in law is always the way to go, especially concerning your home!

I guarantee the landlord will know the law as well!

Don't be so sure about that.

Most landlords, especially people renting out a home, have no idea what the laws
Are.

Well if that's the case then maybe finding out what the law is will provide you with the power to get the situation sorted - either way - forwarned is forarmed :)

Just read here and you will find out that most people who own only a home or two have no idea of the law and do illegal things all the time.
