The lead character steals paintings , he gets involved with some gangsters and has to pay them off. So he and his girlfriend wait for them in a car on a pier after a hiest. They come and kill the girlfriend and shot him the eye. They think he's dead but he's not. He survives gets a glass eye and has moved on. He gets a girlfriend who is a chef and has a duaghter. Her ex husbands a cop and is active in her life.
At the same time a female reporter tries to findthe missing paintings and poses as a housemaid in the gangsters home.
Towards the end of the book the hero takes out the gangsters eye .
He hides the paintigs in a vineyard and at the end hands it over to the cop
