Basically what happens is a person's ovaries take turns producing the egg each month that could be fertilized and produce a child. Once the egg is produced it causes the lining of the uterus to thicken with blood to provide a place for the egg once fertilized, to implant. So I would think with your irregular periods you have only one ovary functioning or perhaps a blockage in the fallopian tube?
A period only every other month is not necessarily due to one ovary not working. (I have one ovary and I've done extensive research on the subject.) Even if only one ovary were working, the other would take over and ovulate each month.
Having a period, or lack there of, has very little, if anything, to do with your fallopian tube(s).
Having "episodes" like you've described could be due to several reasons, including delayed ovulation. After having a child, there is a massive swing of hormones which could be interfering with a "normal" production of estrogen & progesterone.
