I have a leaky bath tub drain, that is leaking what looks like near the rubber seal. It has a lever that you pop up to fill the tub. I cannot figure out how to remove the drain, there is a screen that is blocking access to the drain. I cannot figure out how to remove this screen without damaging. I am assuming that when I do remove it, all I need to do is replace the plumbers putty around the lip of the drain. Any answers would be appreciated! Thanks!

Some screens have a screw in the center, while others are adhered. If its adhered you have to pry it up. Be gentle and work your way around the edge. It should come up after a little playing. Other than that I can't help much without looking at it...

Junkie told you how to remove the strainer. Let me take it from there.
For that stubborn drain they make a tub too,(see imagel that looks like a chrome pipe with a deep cross grooved in the bottom. This fits the cross in the drain which may be removed by unscrewing it out counterclockwise. THe drain unscrews from the tub shoe and when you get ikt off then clean up the old putty seal by running a ring of plumbers putty around the lip. In place of a tub tool you can also take a pair of pliers and stick the bends down in the cross, and using a screwdriver for a handle unscrew the lip. Good luck, Tom

I have never seen that configuration before. In our old stand up shower... that piece does not screw out, but rather is glued in. The PVC drain below it (basement) just barely fits around it and is held in place by friction. One time I noticed it leaking in the basement and just pushed it upwards so that it was on tighter and that solved the problem. However, I doubt any professional job, or in most cases, any other house would be designed the same.

No... I was just commenting. I gave my 2 cents, and then someone went on from there. I just was making a comparison to our old makeshift system.
