Let's all hear it for Rio
Don't you just love it when the underdog wins, and wins spectacularly.

Rio has won the right to stage the 2016 games and for once the oratory of Chicago's Obama didn't win the day, in fact, it may have actually been a negative, or at least the snub that he didn't stick around to hear the result was a negative. The days are gone when the US President can just swan into town and we will all swoon at his rhetoric

Brazil is an emerging power . Our President made a fool of himself on the world stage ,a habit he is developing with regularity .

Perhaps the point was lost on you as to why Venezeula's Chavez was buying short range missiles. It wasn't just that his country borders Columbia

First you said Brazil was an emerging power, then it becomes clear that it is an emerging energy power, that I can understand.

I know being in America you think power comes from the end of a gun or a missile, but there are other forms of power as China and Brazil well know including trade. Even Iran has power and it doesn't have the bomb

This is what I read. They have to buy arms first before they are a military power and they want to be peaceful,. what ?

Tom, almost the entire country is Amazon rain forest. So they will conscript natives, I assume and train them in gorilla warfare supplemented with poison darts.

As a Canadian I don't think power means living at the end of a gun or missile. Where have you been the last month or two, Iran is threatening to build a bomb. All world powers are against them.

I think Rio sounds fabulous! The first time a South American country has won the bid.

We were hosted by a Communist country last time and I didn't hear people complain.

I agree with WG. Rio was always favored.
Chicago... get a handle on your crime and next time,it will be you!

You are a little behind the times, Amazon rain forest is fast vanishing along with the natives and Brazil has a population of 180 million and a strong manufacturing sectorBrazil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Yes it is usual to acquire arms before becoming a military power and perhaps they feel the need to protect themselves from their more unstable neighbours or at least present a deterent, not everything is measured by the American standards of being able to completely wipe your neighbours from the face of the Earth

Iran is given far more importance than it deserves. If there wasn't a problem with the US we probably wouldn't have any issues with them and you cannot blame them for wanting an A-bomb, since their enemies and neighbours have them. Paranoia is catching and there is no shortage of it in that part of the world or it seems in other places too.

tickle I don't know what is hard to understand here . Brazil is both an emerging economic and military power. That's a fact . It is there plan to be at least a regional hegemon .It's armed forces are growing to a point that they are no longer simply an internal security instrument. Their perto-dollars has allowed them to increase their purchases of military hardware.

I'm not saying they are doing anything wrong. Arms buildups in Venezuela Chile, Colombia and generally around the region ,plus narco-gangs sort of compells them to defend their interests ;especially their new found oil reserves in the Santos Basin .
But their recent military purchases have included submarines ;including the first nuclear sub in the region qualifies them as being an emerging power.

    Win Boosts Brazil's Stature, Lula's Legacy - WSJ.com

Brazil stabilized their economy via a business friendly government looking to the free market, AND they explored offshore to find huge oil reserves.

Rio - an appropriate choice over Chicago - definitely.

I'm actually glad Rio got the vote. It's the first time South America has been chosen, and I think that they were the obvious choice.
