Why does my dog do this?

My oldest dog who is about 5 months old now likes to play a new game he discovered. He likes for you to come and get him when you are ready to go inside. Then when you get to him he runs to the other side of the yard and sits down. So, you walk over to get him there and then what does he do but run away again and sits down waiting on you. So, after a few tries I give up and go inside, a few minutes later I hear a scratch at the door because he wants in.

That is a no brainer. He wants you to play ! Do you have a ball, or pick up a stick and get him to chase it. He is just like kid.

Anyway, I figured he was just wanting to play with me but we play then when it is time to go inside he does this. Alty said she could tell me why he did this but I needed my own thread for it. I was wondering what she was going to say about it. She already guessed the breed of the dog just by telling her this desciption.

He's a retriever, his job is to retrieve things for his master.

If he's not able to do his job he'll get difficult.

Basically, what he's trying to tell you is that he wants to work. He's not ready to go inside because he hasn't done his job yet.

Get a toy, throw it for him and teach him to bring it back for you. Hiding the toy is also good for this breed.

It's in his blood, his genes. This is also a very good way to train him to do other things. If the working part of his brain is fulfilled then he'll be more willing to learn.

With our lab I bought a tennis ball and drilled a hole through it, attached a long rope. When I threw the ball I held onto the rope. That way, when Indy caught the ball I could pull him back to me, with the command to come. I'd keep treats in my pocket. After he came I'd offer a treat, say "drop it". He'd release the ball to get the treat.

It only took around 2 days before I no longer needed the rope or the treats.

After learning this he became much easier to handle and I never had to chase him around the yard anymore.

Just remember to be patient. He's still pretty young. The bigger the breed the longer it takes for them to mature, or so it seems. :)

He'll also get less difficult once he's neutered.

Well, You know my situation about not being able to post pictures. I will have to try though. I don't have any of Colby which is the golden retriever/ boxer.

I do have a pic of my aussie so I will have to try him.

Oh my god. It actually worked. This is Coco.

He is my Aussie

He's ready to work your arse off now. You can see it in his eyes. What a cutie.

He is a sheepherding dog. High energy, Adam. If they don't work, they are not happy and will even herd kids, which can be misconstrued sometimes as violent actions. So, my friend, keep him busy and start now. They are highly intelligent, trustworthy and will give you their soul. Keep him busy until you can get a handle on his needs. You are boss, you are the alpha person.

In fact if you took him to a dog park, he would herd the dogs. No kidding ! I have heard that the herding dogs are closest to the wolves because the wolves institute a herding action amongst themselves to bring down their prey. Not a bad thing, a talent.

Adam, Colby sounds like a three year old child who doesn't want to leave the park. :)

Alty has some great advice about training him.

I just want to caution you not to let him get used to playing his version of tag (at least not until he is extremely good at coming when you call him). In a fenced in yard, it isn't a problem, but if he gets out then he might think your efforts to catch him are part of the "game". He needs to understand that when you say 'It's time to go inside' playtime is over.

Coco is so cute. He looks like he is ready to get into mischief.
