The shower head is leaking badly. Do I need a plumber or can I fix it myself?

Depends on where exactly it is leaking. If the joint between the shower head and the supply piping is leaking, all it may need is new thread sealant and tightening.

It's leaking out of the shower head, not the joint. Not sure that's a helpful explanation.

Hi Frangipanis:

If the shower head is DRIPPING when you shut the valve off then the problem will be at the washers associated with the shower valve.

Basically, you will need to shut off the water to the house and then remove the chrome trim and handle(s) and remove the cartridge assembly/washers and bring them to a local plumbing supply house or home depot and get a replacement.

Not a real hard job, but definitely need basic mechanical skills... ;)

If you can provide us with a NAME on the valve or post a picture of the valve we should be able to tell you more here...

Hi there Mark. I'm going to play it safe and have a handyman look at it tomorrow... in the meantime, there is a constant cantata of DRIPPING that's driving me CR-AAAZY! :)

There is the showerhead and two taps... not sure what you mean by a 'valve'. A wing nut? If so, there are two wing nuts.

Will let you know how it goes.

By valve I mean the two "TAPS" (see image of a 3 handle tap below). In other words, inside, under the handles there will be washers and seats and it is very likely that they will need to be changed when the handyman gets there.

He will need to shut off the water, remove the chrome colored trim and the handles and that will allow him access to the STEM ASSEMBLIES with the washes.

All fixed, thanks guys. You scared me with that drawing Mark, but reasonably straight forward case of changing the washers. He changed the stem assemblage though because they originally installed the wrong size, so now it's better than before.

Very glad the drips have stopped :)
