    My Parakeets

Wow alty I didn't know that you knew so much about birds! (even though you're a pets experts.. duh!) maybe you can give me some tips because I have found it impossible to train my parrakets. I have a female one who is scared of me but not as much as she used to be. I can't touch her at all and she has only come out of the cage once. I also have a male who bites everyone and snaps every time I pass by his cage. I think he thinks it's fun but he also bites me if I try to touch him. I have had the male for a year and the female for about 5 months. Should I make a separate thread for this question?

Was the male always snappy or did this just start when you got the female?

    How old are they?

Where did you get them? Were they hand raised?

How often do you spend time with them? When you open the cage do they each hop out or do you have to get them out?

The male was always snappy. I got the birds from my sister who bred them. She had him separated from the others because he would peck at the other birds so she just gave him to me. He was scared when I first got him but after a week he wasn't scared anymore but he started biting and pecking at me whenever I came near him. If I put my hand in his cage he pecks at it like crazy!
I also keep him separated from the female because I don't want him to hurt her. He sometimes pulls her tail if it's near his cage or he'll peck at the bars of the cage, but I think he's just playing with her when he does that. One of my sisters once put the female in his cage and she said that he didn't do anything.
I got the female from my sister about 5 months ago to keep the male company. She is about 8 months old and very scared. The male is about a year and a half old. I got him last September and he was about 3 or 4 months old at that time.
I don't really spend a whole lot of time with them. I play with them for a couple of minutes in the morning when I feed them, after lunch, and after dinner. Everyone in my family plays with them too. The male hops out when I open the cage, but the female doesn't. She only came out of the cage once when my sister put her in the male's cage.

Have they ever had their wings clipped?

I would recommend having the females wings clipped, it will make her easier to train and tame.

Try the bathroom trick. Pick her up, hold her in your hand (you may want to wear gloves the first time) then go to the bathroom, close the door, turn off the light and wait for around 5 minutes.

Do this every day. Soon she'll begin to trust you. That and clipping her wings will make training and taming possible.

Trust is the biggest milestone. Once you've established trust, are consistent, spend time with her daily, she'll be trained in no time.

    Same for the male. :)

Try it for a week, let me know if you've made any progress after that week. :)
