I was pulled over a few weeks ago for speeding and given two tickets, one for speeding and one for an expired insurance card. My insurance is in my parents' hands, so I had not a clue that it was. I figured I had insurance, just not the updated card. So, I was told I would just have to bring proof that I was insured to court and all would be well. After two weeks of literally begging my mom every day to get the proof, she waits until yesterday to finally tell me that I was, in fact, not covered at the time. So I immediately got my own insurance plan and everything. I have court on Thursday, what do you think the judge will decide to do?

Also I'm in NJ. I've already paid the speeding ticket, I did a couple days after I was given the tickets.

Also, if you feel like answering this one.. I asked my mom if she would pay the fine I was given for the insurance. I paid my speeding ticket and everything, but the insurance was not in my hands. She's trying to twist the story into my fault by saying she had told me to look into getting my own insurance before this whole thing happened. She waited until three days before I had to go to court to tell me I never had insurance, and never told me in the beginning when it expired which was in July, am I wrong in thinking she should pay at least part of the fine?

I think the judge will make you pay the fine. Regardless who's hands the insurance is in, it is still your responsibility as a driver to ensure things are right. If you borrowed a car that wasn't registered, it would be your fault, right?

And my opinion is yes, you are wrong for thinking she should pay. If you are old enough to drive, you are old enough to be responsible for everything about driving including your insurance.

How serious of a fine though? I read it ranges from $300 to $1200.

I understand the responsibility end, which is why as soon as I was told I wasn't covered I went and got my own insurance. To my knowledge before hand, I was covered on her insurance. I feel it was at least reasonable to ask that I be informed the policy expired since I had no control over it. In that case, I could have gotten my own policy much sooner. I did look into quotes before this happened, but realize I am a full-time college student with a part-time job, any extra money is hard to come around.

Provided you have no other record and you are respectful when speaking to him, I would imagine the minimal fine will be issued.

Explain to him what happened, let him know you know it was your responsibility and that you had trusted you would have been informed. Show proof on your new policy. Never know... might let you off with a warning.

I know this question will come up, so when he asks why I did not check the expiration date, how should I respond?

Honestly I've had a lot of things going on between my ex stalking me, parent's divorce, and school and checking expiration dates was last on my list of things that needed to get done.

Because you had believed that it was taken care of or at least would have been told it wasn't.

Basically offer an explanation but not as an excuse.

Then hope for the best.

Best of luck... tough, potentially expensive lesson... but the old cliché remains... you want something done right, do it yourself.

I think you will have a problem because of your driving history: "The last time I got pulled over was in May I believe..I got pulled over for speeding (I know, I'm getting the hint to slow down), but got a ticket for expired registration. Before that was last year, summer, pulled over for one reason, ticketed for no headlights with windshield wipers on. And last April I got a ticket for 9 over."

Speeding in May 2009; speeding Summer of 2008 as well as no headlights while using windshield wipers; speeding in April 2008, 9 miles over the limit.

Ticket for expired registration in the past.

Now it's no insurance and whatever else. You apparently drive too fast without the benefit of a valid registration and valid insurance.

At some point someone is going to want to make an impression on you and so far that hasn't happened. I see a hefty fine.

I ended up getting my speeding ticket reduced to a 2 pt instead of a 4 pt and had to pay $50 fine for insurance, so all in all, not too bad

Not at all - I am amazed by a Court that allows a person with your record to walk away with 2 points and a $50 fine.

Simply amazed.

Of course, if you're ever in a bad accident this will all come back to bite you but hopefully that will never happen.

I still had to pay a fine for speeding as well. I'm not sure why they gave me the break, I didn't ask for it. I actually didn't think the speeding ticket would come up because I paid it online before the court date. I'm honestly just as taken aback as anyone.. I figured I'd be walking out at least $300 lighter.. which is a heck of a lot for me.

Although I can confess this because he has passed away but my husband (who had a luxury car and a heavy foot) once got three speeding tickets the same day on his way home from work - a 45 minute drive!

I think that's a World record. I honestly thought they would shred his Drivers License (minimally) but he got heavy fines and no points for moving violations.

So I have no idea what Judges think - or how/when/why.
