Do you have a firewall or Internet suite preventing you from connecting? Can you "ping" (for example) Google?

Ping www. google.com (leave out the space after the period.)

    Ping 64.233.169.103

If the first line works, but the second one doesn't, you may have a DNS problem. Otherwise, I'd suspect a firewall problem.

Also, type "ipconfig" and hit <ENTER>. You should see an IP address, a subnet mask, and a default gateway. Report back with what you see.

Also, your cable company may not be recognizing your modem as one that is authorized on their network. If this is the case, you'll have to talk to them about that.

Since you can ping external sites, both by name and by IP address, your problem has to be in the firewall. Your Internet connection is working properly.

First, get into Windows Firewall (via the control panel), and shut it off (temporarily). You can check now to see if you have Internet connectivity before you go any further.

You have an IP address, 192.168.1.2. You also have a default gateway, 192.168.1.1. Both of these addresses are in the range that indicates that you have a local hardware firewall. It's possible that the firewall device is electrically damaged, but before going there, I think it's probably prudent to see if you can connect to the hardware firewall.

First, reset your hardware firewall. I'm not sure what brand you have, but many hardware firewalls have a "reset" button on them. You push and hold the reset button for 15-30 seconds, then release it. The firewall should start working. If there are indicator lights on the front, you can observe them to see if the firewall is working.

Once you've reset the firewall, launch Internet Explorer. Windows Firewall should still be turned off. In the address bar, enter 192.168.1.1 and hit <ENTER>. You should connect to the box. Now you have to enter the username and password for the firewall/router. Since you've reset the unit, it's the default username and password. If you'll let me know the model and brand of the device, I can give you the default username and password. You'll want to change the password once you get into the device. Once you get into the firewall, you'll need to copy the settings and post them here. It's possible that your ISP and your firewall don't agree with each other. If that's what's happening, you'll have to ask the ISP how to connect (they usually have information on their web sites about how to make it work. If you need help, I'll help you out).

It's also possible that you'll be able to connect to the Internet after resetting the firewall/router. If that happens, you're in luck. Don't forget to change the default firewall/router password.

Click <START> then <RUN>. In the box enter "services.msc" and click "OK". The "Services" window will appear. Click on the "Name" column to sort and look for "Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)". Right-click on that. In the box that pops up, change "Startup type" to "Disabled". Reboot your computer and see if you can connect to the Internet.

If you want to get Windows Firewall working again, you might have to "repair" Windows. Alternately, you can always load the free version of Zone Alarm instead of Windows Firewall which will replace the firewall with one that actually works.

    Download ZoneAlarm Free 8.0.298.0 - FileHippo.com

You aren't giving me enough feedback to tell what's happening.
Did you stop the Windows Firewall?
What happens when you try to connect?
What error messages do you get?
Do you have an IP address (IPCONFIG from a CMD window)?

    I stopped windows firewall.
When I try to connect it says server not found, I also now noticed that in the bottom right corner it says local intranet but will not connect to any websites.192.168.1.1

In one post you say that you can connect, and in the next you say that you can't.
I asked if you were running a hardware firewall. Your IP address (192.168.1.1) says that you are, but I don't believe that is your IP address. It's probably the address of the hardware firewall.

    1. Can you ping the server?
    2. Click Start|Run, enter CMD, and click GO. At a DOS-type window, type IPCONFIG<enter> and copy and paste ALL of the result into a message here.
    3. Did you try to reset your hardware firewall?
    4. Disconnect your hardware firewall and connect your computer directly to your modem (Cable, DSL, etc). Then try to connect.

Your best bet for obtaining the driver is online. An SM bus controller (System Management Bus) is included in most chipsets and if you see it in Device Manager, it's undoubtedly there. You used a disk from another PC? Was this the same model as yours? It probably wasn't, so it didn't contain all of the drivers for your PC. What brand/model/model number is the computer? You need to look for "chipset" drivers or "motherboard" drivers from the manufacturer.

Here is a link to an Intel site.

    Chipsets - SMBus drivers

Try running their "Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility" from the link on that page.
