I want to install a sub panel in my garage located 50 feet from the Main (100 amp) electrical panel which has a load on phase A 36.5 amps and a load of 14.5 amps on phase B. The anticipated draw in the garage application is around 8000 watts for commercial lighting. My intention is to install 1 1/4'' schedule 80 conduit and to run four 4 awg THHN conductors to provide for a 70 amp Homeline sub panel. My problem is the sub panels that Ive been looking at only have 2 spaces (4 circuits) and I have eight 1000 watt lights that draw about 8.5 amps a piece. If I put two lights on one 20 amp breaker I am afraid of a trip nuisance. I also would like to provide for a few 20 amp receptacles for a work station in the garage. Any suggestions.

Well get another panel. You could use a 100 amp 20 circuit panel with a 50 or 60 amp breaker in the main panel.

I agree, why are you "looking at" such small panels?


8000 watts of "commercial lighting" in a detached garage? What are you doing out there that you need that much light?. :rolleyes: ;)
