I have a dimmer switch controlling my back porch light. Today I went to turn on the light, slid the switch to the on position and nothing happened. No breakers blew. I checked all the lights and outlets in the house and all are working properly. I tested the light fixture by taking it down and hooking it up to another area with another type of switch and it worked properly. There is juice going to the switch. Both the black and white wires are hot where the fixture attaches and this should not be. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

How many and what color wires are in the switch box. If this light is on a circuit with other things and they are turned on , you will have voltage on the neutral. The question is how much voltage. If the wires in the box are a switch leg there will be voltage on the white but not on the black.
So describe the wires in the box.

There are three wires. Red, Black and White. The red is not being used right now as it is not a three way switch. I hooked up a toggle switch and both the black and white wires were hot at where the fixture would be hooked up even though the switch was turned off.

Three wire cable (black, white and red) does not necessarily mean a 3-way switch. Three wire cable is used for other things as well a 3-way switches. Right now does not sound logical to have three wires and only three wire in a switch box unless it is a 3-way switch. Please describe the wires at the light fixture box. Also, just to be sure, how many terminals does the switch you took out have?
