    Ok well I think what your asking is how do you tell the size apart as an equation. Try is this way. Take 5 numbers like -2,-1,0,1,2 and put them in place of y then do the equations for each. Make a sketched graph of each and then compare the sizes.

    Thinner. When the lead coefficient of the x^2 term is >1 or< -1 (in this case it's -3 which is < -1) the graph gets thinner.
