We are selling our home and are disconnecting a apt. size 20'' stove in the basement that was hardwired by an electrician and appears to be a 220 line. (the new people don't want a stove) can we just put a 220 outlet rather than removing the line from the box?

Yes, but that is a 240 Volt not amp line. The proper receptacle will depend on the size of the wire. Look on stove to see what amperage draw is. That will tell you the proper receptacle.

Or better yet, look at the size of the breaker in the panel. That will tell you what size receptacle you need.

Also, it is not necessary to install a receptacle. You may simply remove the cord going to the stove, then cap off the wires inside the wall box.

Install a blank cover, and you're done. (if you want to be real nice, write down the circuit number on the cover. Use a permanent marking pen.
