Music Equipment damaged in fire - How do we claim?
Hey good people. There was a fire in the building where we have our rehearsal space. Our guitars, drums, amps, speakers and basically everything we have was severely damaged by water, heat, smoke and debris. We hadn't signed the lease yet and have no insurance on our rehearsal space. From what we gather the fire started because another occupant had lit candles in their rented room which is against the policy of the building. Would anyone know if the owner of the building can claim on our behalf as our equipment was in the building? Or do we have to pursue legal action if someone is held accountable for the fire? Any information will be greatly appreciated as we have no means to replace even a few pieces of our equipment. It was everything we had. We've been playing music for a little under 10 years and had accumalated some serious gear. Since we're not signed to a label or anything we don't exactly have the means to re-purchase our things.

    Thanks so much,

You should have had insurance to cover your equipment no matter where it was, in transit, stationary, whatever. It is a shame you hadn't signed a lease, that probably would have covered you. I don't think you have any recourse now. Sorry.

    Hello T:

Even though you didn't sign a lease, the owner MIGHT have coverage for contents... It doesn't have to be HIS contents. Actually whether you signed a lease or NOT wouldn't make any difference in this case.

Next, you can sue the candle guy, for all the good that'll do.

    So, you have SOME recourse.
